New laser displacement sensor improves accuracy 10 fold
 
 
With a 10-fold improvement in accuracy compared to other systems, the new OD Max laser displacement sensor is ideal for applications where distance measurement is required with an accuracy in microns rather than in millimetres – precision suited to high-end solutions and applications such as quality assurance or surface inspection.

A quantum leap in the measurement accuracy of laser displacement sensors has been achieved with the OD MAX to 0.1% of the measurement area. With a separate sensor and evaluation unit, the OD MAX offers further advantages when it comes to installation. The extremely compact optical laser head can fit into locations with very limited mounting space. In addition to processing the measured values of 1 or 2 sensors, which simply plug into its ports, the evaluation unit also contains integrated arithmetical functions. These functions enable calculations to be performed on the measured values, ensuring that the output from the evaluation unit directly relates to the characteristic under investigation. Just one example is the use of 2 sensors to calculate the thickness of material.

By employing highly accurate CMOS technology, as opposed to less accurate CCD or PSD methods, the OD MAX offers significant advantages when targets are either highly reflective or very dark. Featuring a tough, IP67-rated enclosure, designed to withstand nearly any industrial automation environment, the sensor is available in three variants for operating ranges of 25-35mm, 65-105mm and 250-450mm. The evaluation unit has two analogue outputs in addition to five switching outputs that are fully configurable via teach-in. In addition, two status indicators provide information on the current operating state.

The OD MAX has been awarded a class 2 laser safety classification. As a result the OD MAX can be considered an eye-safe laser measurement device with no special precautions necessary.
