The new SEK52 capacitive encoder is set to have a profound impact within all industries and applications that employ brushless servo technology. Not only does it offer 16 times the resolution of a standard resolver, but it does so at a competitive price. |
Principle of operation In order to offer users of resolvers a robust and cost effective alternative, a new capacitive technology has been developed for the SEK52 low cost Hiperface encoder.
The encoder consists of three basic components. The first is a plastic rotor with a sinusoidal format. This acts as a die-electric which rotates between the other two components; pcb's which form the plates of the capacitor.
The encoder utilises holistic scanning to detect the whole disc, enabling compensation for errors caused by the eccentricity of the rotor disc.

The elimination of a glass code disc, found in conventional encoder designs, ensures that the SEK52 is resistant to the harshest environmental conditions. Furthermore, the simple construction of the encoder leads to lower production costs - essential when competing with a resolver consisting of little more than a few wound coils. By generating 16 Sine and Cosine periods per revolution the SEK52 guarantees a higher level of positioning accuracy and speed holding performance than can be achieved from the single Sine and Cosine produced by a resolver. The electrical interface - HIPERFACE In addition to offering users a higher accuracy than can be achieved with a resolver, the SEK52 uses the HIPERFACE interface ensuring low cost, high performance connectivity.
All HIPERFACE encoders, including the SEK52 have an electronic type label into which motor parameters can be stored. The commissioning of a motor fitted with the SEK52 is therefore much easier than a motor fitted with a resolver. The drive can access the data stored in the electronic type label of the SEK52 to automatically configure the drive for the motor connected. This eliminates the need to input the data manually.
All major manufacturers of drives and motors have implemented the HIPERFACE interface and can supply systems using the SEK52. Follow the link for a full list of suppliers offering HIPERFACE compatible drives and motors.
