New sensors make light work of sophisticated anti-collision control SICK introduced the DT60 and DL60, the latest additions to its comprehensive range of distance-measuring sensors, at the 2004 Drives & Controls exhibition. The DT60 and DL60 are cost effective laser sensors that offer both analogue and switched outputs for superior performance.
An analogue output enables more sophisticated control than a switched output in critical anti-collision applications such as overhead cranes and other transport systems. The low cost and compact size of the DL60 and DT60 also makes analogue control a practical option for a wider variety of applications such as liquid level control, parcel sizing and machinery positioning.
Based on SICK’s highly regarded DS60 distance sensor, the DT60 and DL60 use a laser diode to produce red light which is a reflected from the target object to generate an analogue signal proportional to the distance from the target.
The DT60 proximity sensor has a range of 200mm to 6m and is designed to be used with any target material. The DL60 is a reflex unit that is used with a reflector and can operate at distances from 300mm to 24m. Weighing just over 200g and measuring 104mm high, the sensors are easy to mount, and the visible, eye-safe light beam makes positioning the sensors and targets straightforward.
Output current varies from 4mA to 20mA in proportion to the measured distance, with the switched output triggering at a pre-determined final position. Connection is via a standard M12, 5-pin plug.
Both DL60 and DT60 are easy to set up, with “teach-in” configuration using a simple push button to set the position for minimum and maximum analogue outputs and final switched position.
Both units are also available in “plug and play” versions in which the measuring range is set in the factory so that the user does not need to teach it. This option is especially useful for OEMs who use a lot of sensors with the same configuration and end users who need to replace an existing sensor.
Accuracy is ±15mm for the DL60 and ±10mm for the DT60, with a typical reproducibility of around 7mm. The enclosures for both units are IP67 rated making them suitable for most indoor applications as standard, whilst they can also be used outdoors with additional weather protection.
The DL60 and DT60 offer high performance in a compact, cost effective package that brings analogue distance measurement within reach of a wide range of applications in addition to collision avoidance in the materials handling sector.
